The full courier guide for South Africa
Everything about sending a parcel door-to-door: which service to book, what it includes, how pricing is worked out, how to pack properly, which metros and towns we reach, and how the parcel actually travels from your address to your recipient. Start with the section you need.
Courier services across South Africa
UrgentGo Courier runs door-to-door collections and deliveries in every province, from a single envelope in Sandton to daily dispatch for online stores in Cape Town and Durban. Collection is normally within 90 minutes of a confirmed booking, with live tracking and R500 cover included on every parcel.
Same-day, overnight and economy: which service you actually need
The three service levels differ in speed and price, not in care. Choose by how much the delivery time is worth to you.
- Same-day courier — booked before 12:00 noon, collected within 90 minutes and delivered the same working day, usually within 2 to 4 hours inside Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban and the surrounding metros. From R89. Built for signed documents, tender submissions, broken parts and anything that cannot wait until tomorrow.
- Overnight courier — collected before 14:00 and delivered the next business day anywhere in South Africa, including outlying towns. From R129. This is the workhorse for inter-city parcels, e-commerce orders and supplier returns where next morning is fast enough.
- Economy courier — a 2 to 5 working day road service from R79 for parcels that are not time-critical: stock replenishment, bulk stationery, spares and non-urgent gifts. Slower, cheapest, still tracked.
What affects courier pricing in South Africa
Courier pricing is not a flat rate per parcel. Six things move the number, and knowing them stops surprises at checkout. Our full breakdown sits on the courier prices page, but in short:
- Chargeable weight — we bill the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight (length × width × height ÷ 5000). A large light box costs more than a small heavy one.
- Distance and lane — busy metro-to-metro lanes are competitively priced; low-volume rural lanes cost more.
- Service speed — same-day carries a premium over overnight, which carries a premium over economy.
- Collection windows — after-hours, Saturday and public holiday collections cost more because drivers and vehicles are outside standard shifts.
- Remote-area surcharges — farms, mines and small towns far from a depot add a last-mile leg.
- Added cover — R500 is included; declaring a higher value for laptops, medical devices or machinery adds a small percentage of the declared value.
How to prepare a parcel for collection
Most delays and damage claims come from packing, not driving. Five minutes of prep protects the shipment.
- Box it in rigid double-wall cardboard and remove all old labels and barcodes from a reused carton.
- Wrap fragile items individually in bubble wrap, then fill every gap so nothing shifts when the box is tilted.
- Seal all seams with reinforced packing tape — one strip down the middle is not enough.
- Write the recipient's name, full address and mobile number inside as well as outside.
- Weigh and measure the closed box before booking so the quote matches the chargeable weight.
Have the parcel ready at the door at the booked time — the driver waits briefly, but a missed collection may need to be rebooked.
Courier coverage in South Africa's main metros
Our densest networks are the metros where most of the country's parcels move:
- Johannesburg — same-day across the metro, including Sandton, Midrand, Roodepoort, Randburg and the East Rand.
- Pretoria and Centurion — same-day and overnight, including the legal and government precincts.
- Cape Town — CBD, Bellville, Stellenbosch, Paarl and Somerset West same-day; the Garden Route overnight.
- Durban — Umhlanga, Pinetown and Westville same-day, with Richards Bay and Pietermaritzburg next day.
- Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) — metro same-day, with East London and Mthatha overnight.
- Bloemfontein — Free State hub linking Gauteng and both coastal provinces overnight.
Beyond the metros we reach smaller towns through regional partners. Check the full coverage map for your suburb, or find the nearest Bob Box locker if you would rather drop off and let the recipient collect.
Industries we deliver for
Law firms and advocates send court filings and signed originals that cannot be emailed. Pharmacies and labs move temperature-sensitive samples on tight cut-offs. Retailers use us for first and last mile, returns and weekend dispatch, while engineering and mining suppliers send spares to Limpopo and North West sites. Individuals rely on us for passports, ID documents, university applications and Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace sales.
Courier questions we get asked most
How late can I book for same-day delivery?
Bookings confirmed before 12:00 noon are collected and delivered the same working day in the metros. After that cut-off, overnight is the safer option.
What is the cheapest way to send a parcel across the country?
Economy courier from R79 is the lowest tracked door-to-door rate, at 2 to 5 working days. Pack tightly to keep volumetric weight down.
Is my parcel insured?
Every shipment includes R500 cover as standard. Higher-value items such as laptops or medical equipment should be declared at booking for extra cover.
Can you collect from my home or office?
Yes. All three service levels are door-to-door from any street address in a covered area. No account needed.
Do you deliver on Saturdays and public holidays?
Saturday delivery runs on the metro lanes, and weekend emergency dispatch can be arranged on request. Public holidays run on a reduced schedule with a surcharge.

Same-day courier across South Africa: what you get
If you need something moved today, the same-day service is the one most people book. It is a door-to-door delivery: we collect at your address and hand the parcel to the recipient at theirs. You do not drive to a depot and you do not queue at a counter. The full rate table, including the R89 metro rate, sits on our courier prices page, and the service detail is on the same-day courier page.
What the R89 same-day service includes
The R89 rate covers a same-day metro delivery within a single city, for a parcel inside our standard size and weight limits. Everything below is part of that price, not an extra:
- Collection from your address, normally within 90 minutes of booking.
- Door-to-door delivery for the whole journey — no depot drop-off, no counter collection.
- Live tracking from the moment the driver collects until proof of delivery is captured.
- Standard insurance cover of R500 per parcel, with extra cover available if the item is worth more.
- Automatic updates by SMS, email and WhatsApp to both you and the recipient.
Where same-day and overnight reach
Same-day delivery runs in the major metros: Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Sandton, Midrand, Centurion, Randburg, Roodepoort, Bloemfontein, Gqeberha and East London. Book before 12:00 and most parcels are delivered within two to four hours of collection. For everything else there is overnight, which covers all nine provinces — parcels collected before 14:00 arrive at the destination on the next business day. Smaller towns and outlying areas are served on the same overnight network, so a parcel does not have to stay inside a metro to move quickly.
If your parcel is bigger than a standard satchel, the price is worked out on the greater of actual weight or volumetric weight — length times width times height divided by 5,000. That is why two parcels of the same weight can price differently, and why packing tightly usually costs less. The size and weight guide explains the limits before you book, so there is no surprise on collection.
How collection and tracking work, step by step
- 1You enter the pickup address, the delivery address and a short description of the parcel. You get a fixed price before you confirm anything, so nothing changes afterwards.
- 2A driver is assigned and you receive the name and tracking number. Collection is normally within 90 minutes in the metros.
- 3The parcel is scanned at collection and again at delivery. You can follow each status change on the track page, and your recipient gets the same updates.
- 4Proof of delivery is captured when the parcel is handed over, and you can download the record for your own books or for a client.
You can check a live parcel on the tracking page at any time using the number from your booking confirmation. If something does not look right — a missed collection, a parcel held at the wrong address, or a claim — the frequently asked questions cover the common cases, and our team is on 010 023 4832 during business hours.
How courier delivery works in South Africa
Sending something across the country usually comes down to a deadline. A signed lease has to reach the deeds office, a replacement part has to reach a workshop before the afternoon shift, or an online order has to land on a customer's desk in another province. Understanding how the courier network actually moves a parcel makes it much easier to pick the right service, pay a fair price and avoid the disappointment of a missed hand-over.
From your door to theirs
A courier booking is not a postal drop. The journey starts with a collection at the address you supply, not at a counter. Once a driver has the parcel, it is scanned onto a route, and every scan after that updates the tracking record you and the recipient can see. Metro deliveries usually travel directly from the collection address to the delivery address on a single run. Long-distance parcels move through a linehaul leg overnight, which is why a Johannesburg to Cape Town shipment booked in the afternoon can still be knocked on the door the next business day.
Because the driver comes to you, the accuracy of the two addresses on the booking matters more than anything else. A missing unit number, a complex name that changed last month, or a gate code that nobody wrote down can turn a straightforward delivery into a second trip. Add a contact number for the recipient whenever you have one, and mention anything unusual — a boomed estate, a loading bay, a reception that closes at four.
Where UrgentGo delivers
Our network is built around the metros first: Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Gqeberha, Bloemfontein, East London and the surrounding business districts. From those hubs we extend into the smaller towns that sit along the main freight corridors, so a parcel can move from Sandton to Polokwane, or from Durban to Pietermaritzburg, without changing courier company halfway. Overnight coverage reaches all nine provinces, while same-day work is limited to a realistic driving radius inside each metro.
It helps to think in terms of distance rather than suburb names. Anything inside roughly sixty kilometres of a hub can usually be collected and delivered the same day. Beyond that, the parcel needs the overnight network, and the arrival time depends on how far it has to travel and what time it was collected. If you are unsure whether your area is covered, the coverage checker lists every town we serve, and the locations page groups them by province.
What you can send
Documents, contracts, invoices and tender files are the everyday cargo, but the network also carries laptops, replacement parts, medical samples, retail stock and palletised freight. The limits that matter are weight, dimensions and contents. A parcel that is awkward to carry takes longer to load, so oversized items are priced differently from a satchel. Anything restricted by South African law — firearms, narcotics, live animals, certain batteries and hazardous chemicals — cannot travel on a standard courier service.
- Letters and legal documents, including court filings and signed agreements.
- Parcels up to the size and weight your chosen service allows, boxed and sealed.
- Business stock, samples and spare parts for scheduled or ad-hoc dispatch.
- Medical and laboratory items on the specialised medical service, not general parcels.
- Palletised goods and larger freight through the dedicated freight options.
If an item sits in a grey area, check the prohibited items list before booking. Declaring contents honestly protects you: insurance claims on undisclosed items are difficult to uphold, and a parcel that is stopped at a hub delays every other delivery on that route.
Cut-off times and what moves the price
Same-day work depends on when the driver can reach you. Bookings placed in the morning leave room for a collection, a run across town and a signed hand-over before close of business. Bookings placed late in the afternoon realistically become overnight work, even if the distance is short. Saturday has its own earlier cut-off, and Sunday collection is reserved for the emergency service.
Pricing follows four things: distance between pickup and drop-off, the weight or volumetric size of the parcel, how quickly it must arrive, and whether the address sits outside a metro. A light but bulky box can cost more than a dense one because it fills space in the vehicle. Remote or farm addresses add a leg that cannot be combined with other stops. Insurance, after-hours work and weekend dispatch are quoted as add-ons so you can see exactly what you are paying for.
The full rate structure is published on the courier prices page, and the size thresholds are explained in the size and weight guide. Measure and weigh before you book rather than guessing — it is the single most common reason a quote changes at collection.
Packaging that survives the trip
A courier vehicle is not a padded envelope. Parcels are lifted, stacked and moved between vehicles, so the packaging has to cope with pressure on every side. Use a rigid box rather than a soft bag for anything fragile, fill empty space so contents cannot slide, and tape every seam rather than just the top flap. Put the address on the parcel itself as well as on the waybill, and place liquids in a sealed bag with absorbent material around them.
Documents travel best flat and stiffened, not folded into a satchel where they can crease. If you are sending something valuable, photograph it before sealing so a claim, should you ever need one, has evidence behind it. Our packaging guide walks through each item type step by step.
How to book
Booking takes a couple of minutes and does not require an account. Enter the collection address, the delivery address, roughly what you are sending and when it needs to arrive. The system returns a price for each speed option, and you choose the one that fits. Pay by card, EFT or wallet balance, and a tracking number is issued immediately so you can follow the parcel from collection through to the proof of delivery.
If you send regularly, a business account removes the repetition: saved addresses, monthly invoicing and volume rates on the same network. Either way, the dispatch process is identical — only the paperwork changes.
